It seems to me that 99 % of all the money and work in the media industry goes into making content that makes you stupid: numbing entertainment and propaganda-based news. They call it journalism but it really should be called something else. Or we need a new word for truth-seeking journalism.
I don’t think the media and “journalists” are evil. I don’t even think that they are aware of the bigger picture of which they play their parts. The problem is the capitalist system which makes it possible to rule the perception of the world by controlling the money. If there is one real conspiracy out there it is the capitalist conspiracy and it is right there in plain sight. We are all part of it. It is the box that we need to climb out of to be free. It is the coloured glasses that we need to take off to see the world as it really is.
Many of my political friends think that the mainstream media are evil because they don’t tell us the truth about the world. I don’t think so. I think the media are simply willing victims of public relations (propaganda) divisions of seemingly trustworthy sources. But these seemingly trustworthy sources actually represent very specific interests. If the journalists should start questioning the truthfulness of their sources they would not be able to keep up with the competitive pace of the news stream. It is therefore too tempting for the editors to just use the delivered press materials instead of doing real journalistic research. True journalism takes time and costs money. And the corporate media are in it for the money, not the truth.
In Denmark we should start demanding truth-seeking journalism from the public media that we are all paying to: DR. Even though this would make the news a lot more slow. But I would rather read something true that comes to me slowly than a big lie that hits me like a lightning. And they could safe money by stop producing entertainment and propaganda-based news. And reduce DR to a bunch of hardcore truth-seeking journalists that serve us, the people.
